Climb Calbuco Volcano

A climb that combines the evergreen forest and the vestiges of the last eruptions, mixing a the trekking in volcanic scree with easy rock climbing during the summer or on snowy slopes during the winter and the spring. With a huge crater in its upper part and a pyramid of rock in its main summit.

The Calbuco – or Blue Water – is a truncated volcano who owes itself this shape due to a violent eruption in 1893, who also presented importance volcanic activity on the years 2015 and 1961.

Reaching nearly 1,500m above its surrounding peaks, its access is located only 40 kilometers from the city of Puerto Varas. From the village of Ensenada the north route follows a beautiful ridge, with a trekking who allows you to fully appreciate the change of vegetation, while climbing up to a superb natural viewpoint!

Although technically the climbing is not complex, the greatest difficulty is due to the terrain. The constant slope and volcanic scree makes the ascent physically and psychologically demanding, but once on the tree line the views of Lake Llanquihue and the volcanoes Osorno, Puntiagudo and Tronador are subtly colored by a complete panorama from Puerto Montt to the Border with Argentina.
